2005-2006 Annual Report to Members
In 2005, AFSA members collectively provided over $56 million to support relief efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act was finally passed and AFSA went to work to mobilize a working group to prepare for the release of new pricing data under the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA). In the first quarter of 2006, AFSA testified at the FDIC in defense of the Industrial Bank charter. On the legal front, AFSA's program to address municipal ordinances that could interfere with consumers' access to credit continued to be successful. Technology was another focus with a redesigned Web site and extensive "members only" database.

AFSA Strives to Lower the Cost of Financing
AFSA, through ASC X9 Inc., is managing a standards development initiative to create technical guideline standards for electronic contracting systems that are in full compliance with the American National Standards Institute's (ANSI) procedures and directives. The standard's goal is to provide a uniform method of preparing, messaging, securing, and servicing electronic consumer contracts that link various elements of financial commerce.
AFSA is working closely with NADA, Standards for Automotive Retail (STAR), and Standards and Procedures for Electronic Records and Signature (SPeRs) to develop standards for electronic contracting for Motor Vehicle Retail Sale and Lease Financing and move them to the national level.
